Sustainability · In practice at Oakco

Sustainability in the way we design, make and deliver

At Oakco, sustainability is built through practical project decisions — how we use materials, confirm custom work before production, build large trees in sections, prepare them for transport and support them after installation.

Discuss your project

Our approach: at Oakco, sustainability means making practical decisions that can help extend product life, reduce avoidable rework, improve packing efficiency and support maintenance over time. The examples below come from our actual artificial tree projects and factory workflow.

01 · Materials

Real bark used in selected custom trees

For some bespoke artificial trees, Oakco uses real bark as part of the trunk finish when it suits the project brief and required appearance.

MATERIAL REVIEW

Review the bark before the tree is made

Bark appearance is not treated as a generic finish. For relevant custom projects, bark samples can be reviewed before production so the client can assess texture, colour and overall direction against the design brief.

  • Real bark can be incorporated into selected trunk finishes.
  • Bark samples can be prepared for material review before production.
  • Final use depends on tree type, design intent and project requirements.
Why it matters: reviewing bark samples before production helps reduce unsuitable finishes and avoid unnecessary rework. Real bark is treated as a project-specific material choice rather than an environmental claim.

02 · Structure

Large artificial trees are built in sections

For large bespoke trees, sectional construction is a practical part of engineering, packing, transport and site installation.

MODULAR BUILD

Designed for transport, installation and future access

Large trunks, structural sections and canopy components can be divided into manageable modules according to the project. This makes oversized trees practical to manufacture, ship and assemble on site.

  • Large structures can be divided into transportable sections.
  • Branches and canopy components can be removable on suitable designs.
  • Sectional access can make later inspection or component work more practical.
Why it matters: sectional construction can support more efficient packing and container planning while making future access to individual components easier, helping avoid full-product replacement where a smaller repair is possible.

03 · Before production

Confirm first. Reduce avoidable rework later.

A significant part of responsible production happens before full manufacturing begins.

PROJECT CONFIRMATION

Drawings, samples and finishes are reviewed before scale-up

For bespoke projects, dimensions, structural requirements, foliage direction, colours and finishes can be confirmed through drawings, samples and project discussions before full production. The goal is straightforward: resolve visible issues early rather than remake finished products later.

  • Project dimensions and key details confirmed before production.
  • Samples or finish references used when the project requires them.
  • Colours, foliage direction and finish references can be reviewed before scale-up.
Why it matters: confirming visible and structural details before scale-up helps reduce avoidable remakes, wasted materials and additional freight caused by late project changes.

04 · Packaging & shipping

Packing is planned around the actual tree

Oakco's large artificial trees are not shipped as one generic carton. Trunks, branches and canopy components are packed according to size, structure and installation sequence.

Suitable cartons and protective materials are reused where practical. For large projects, sectional construction also helps us pack components more efficiently and plan container loading around the actual shipment rather than a fixed retail-style package.

Why it matters: project-specific packing can reduce unnecessary packaging, make better use of shipping space and lower the likelihood of damage that would require replacement components or repeat shipments.

05 · Full-tree review

We inspect the tree before it becomes a site problem

For selected large-tree projects, full-tree assembly and dimensional checks can take place in the factory before packing.

PRE-ASSEMBLY & QC

Check scale, structure and appearance before shipment

Factory pre-assembly gives the team an opportunity to review proportions, connections, branch placement and overall appearance before the tree is packed for site installation.

  • Overall proportions and dimensions can be checked before shipment.
  • Connections and sectional fit can be reviewed during assembly.
  • Issues found in the factory are easier to correct than after delivery.
Why it matters: finding fit or proportion issues before shipment helps reduce site rework, replacement parts and additional transport after installation has already begun.

06 · Everyday practice

Everyday practices at Oakco

Some sustainability improvements come from practical day-to-day choices in production, packing and how our team travels to work.

PACKAGING

Reuse suitable materials

Suitable cartons and protective packing materials are reused where practical instead of being discarded immediately after one use.

PRODUCTION

Separate recoverable offcuts

Metal offcuts from fabrication are separated where practical for recycling or recovery through available local channels.

COMMUTING

Encourage lower-carbon travel

Within the team, walking, cycling, public transport and shared commuting are encouraged where practical.

Why these small actions matter: none of them makes manufacturing impact-free, but together they reduce unnecessary disposal, support material recovery and make lower-impact choices part of everyday operations rather than a separate marketing programme.

07 · Longer useful life

Think beyond the day of installation

For large commercial artificial trees, sustainability is closely connected to how long a product remains useful. Specification, installation, exposure, cleaning and access to replaceable components all influence that service life.

01Specify

Match materials and structure to the intended environment.

02Build for access

Use sectional structures where the project benefits from future access.

03Install

Assemble the tree in its intended site configuration.

04Maintain

Clean and inspect the installation as needed.

05Replace parts

Replace suitable foliage, branches or components where the design allows.

06Extend use

Keep the installation useful for longer before full replacement is considered.

Why it matters: extending useful life through appropriate specification, maintenance and component replacement can reduce the need to manufacture and ship a complete replacement tree prematurely.

08 · Project documentation

Documentation for responsible specification

Where a project requires fire, UV, material or care information, Oakco confirms the documents applicable to the selected product, application and destination market.

Frequently asked questions

What clients usually ask us

Why does Oakco use real bark on some artificial trees?

Real bark can be used on selected bespoke trunks when it supports the required texture and visual direction. It is a project-specific material choice rather than a blanket sustainability claim.

Can parts of a large artificial tree be replaced?

On suitable sectional designs, branches, foliage or other components may be replaceable without rebuilding the complete tree. This depends on the original structure and should be discussed during specification.

How does modular construction help a large project?

Sectional construction makes very large trees more practical to manufacture, pack, transport and install. It can also make later access to individual components easier.

What can help extend the service life of a large artificial tree?

Correct indoor or outdoor specification, suitable UV or fire-performance options where required, secure installation, regular cleaning and inspection, and access to replaceable components can all help a large artificial tree remain useful for longer.
